3/ ESCALATOR GUIDELINES 2011

Escalator Performing

Arts 2011 Guidelines

Escalator is an artist development initiative which aims to identify, nurture and establish creative talent in the East across all art forms.

Escalator Performing Arts is for artists, companies and creative producers based in the East of England who define their practice as theatre, dance, performance art or live art.

The programme is produced by The Junction, in partnership with Colchester Arts Centre, and supported by Arts Council England, East. Escalator Performing Arts has been running for 7 years, having supported a wide range of artists and companies (emerging and mid-career) in their creative development, including: Tom Dale Company, Robin Deacon, Indefinite Articles, New International Encounter and Bryony Kimmings.

There are two Escalator Performing Arts call-outs each year (Spring and Autumn) and between 15 and 20 artists, companies and creative producers will be supported annually.

“For NIE, the Escalator programme and work of The Junction has been invaluable in supporting the development of our company. It’s vital for the industry to provide a safe and facilitating environment for making new, exciting, challenging and innovative work.”

Cat Moore: General Manager / Producer, NIE

“Escalator is an excellent scheme that has enabled Hoipolloi to develop our creativity, hone our producing skills and, perhaps most importantly, share our knowledge and experience with emerging talent in the region.”

Simon Bedford: Producer, Hoipolloi

Who can apply:

Escalator Performing Arts is an exciting opportunity for emerging / mid-career artists, companies and creative producers who think that a period of structured support will enable them to develop artistically and explore new market places for their work.

Before applying to Escalator Performing Arts its worth having conversations with Regularly Funded Organisations (RFO’s) in the East region to see if they may be able to offer any support in kind such as mentoring, studio space or advice. A list of RFO’s can be found at: www.artscouncil.org.uk.

In addition RFO’s can nominate companies, artists or creative producers to join the Escalator Performing Arts programme.

The support offered:

Escalator artists, companies and creative producers will receive tailored support based on their individual needs and, where appropriate, be supported to apply to Grants for the Arts to fund their development programme. Escalator Performing Arts provides time and space for testing, playing, taking risks, making mistakes, collaboration and peer learning.

With this in mind the following creative and business support is possible through the programme:

Targeted mentoring from practicing artists, producers and venue representatives to help you achieve your aims.

Opportunities to ‘go and see’ work by other artists / companies (regionally, nationally, internationally).

Support to develop a new company or collective.

Studio space to try out ideas and have fun in a supportive environment.

Support to explore new directions, techniques, collaborations or areas of working.

Opportunities to scratch work in the East region and beyond and receive feedback.

Support to explore international collaborations and co-productions.

Support to experiment with theatre ‘gaming’ and new technology.

One-on-one surgeries with RFO’s to develop your vision, establish

networks and make connections.

How to apply:

You can apply by completing an Escalator Performing Arts application form, which considers the following:

You and Your work: outlining your current practice, creative vision.

Previous work and creative practice (last 2 years): track record, partnerships, achievements, documentation.

Escalator Performing Arts proposal: identifying areas of research, exploration and enquiry. Mentioning developments and or shifts in practice. Identifying mentors / collaborators. Highlighting originality, innovation and experimentation. Signposting key milestones in your development process (this could be done as a timeline). An indication of the level of support required (this may include a budget).

Audience: how you might engage with the public in the short-term / long term, your target audience, audience interaction and experience.

Evaluation: documenting activity, evaluation processes, feedback.

A small selection of supporting material may also be submitted e.g. CVs, video clips, links, show reviews, testimony from other artists / venues.
